The red-light cameras in Lafayette aren't the most popular thing in the city, but they could be coming to an end next month if a contract renewal doesn't get approved by the Lafayette City-Parish council.

The council voted to give Joey Durel the approval to begin negotiations for a new contract with Redflex Traffic Systems. The vote to give him approval wasn't necessary, but Durel wanted to call for it because he wanted to gauge the feelings of the council before negotiating.

The future of the program still lies in the hands of the council because they still have to vote to approve the contract at all.

The Redflex contract expires in June.
