About 15,000 communities across the nation will take part in the 31st annual National Night Out Against Crime in a way to reconnect with their neighbors and the first responders who keep those communities safe.

Lafayette Police Department spokesperson Cpl. Paul Mouton said the free event will be held in Girard Park in Lafayette Tuesday evening.

"National Night Out is law enforcement's way of giving a shot in the arm to the community to say, 'Hey we need to reconnect with the people that live around us versus our busy lives...and reconnect' because communication is the key to crime prevention."

Mouton said members of the SWAT team will be out at Girard Park, as well as members of the Lafayette Fire Department, and members of the horse patrol.

Blue Bell Ice Cream, Domino's Pizza, and a fun jump will be provided at the free event.
