Lawmakers To Consider Raising La. Minimum Wage
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A collaboration of groups that advocate for low-income families are asking lawmakers to boost Louisiana'sminimum wage, saying too many workers are struggling with poverty in the state.
Several Democratic lawmakers have filed proposals that would set Louisiana'sminimum wage anywhere from $8.25 per hour to $10.10, up from the hourly federal rate of $7.25.
Lawmakers will debate the measures in the session that begins March 10.
The wage hike faces opposition from Gov. Bobby Jindal and business organizations who say it would force small businesses to lay off workers, raise the cost of their products and stifle economic activity.
Supporters of the increase say it would provide a direct pay raise for thousands of people in Louisiana'sworkforce, raise people out of poverty and pump money into the economy.
