The Lafayette city-parish government is looking at a lawsuit coming their way that could total in millions of dollars in payments.

This lawsuit stems from the council voting to block a planned garbage transfer station in Northern Lafayette. Waste Facilities of Lafayette filed the lawsuit this week in federal court after being barred from using the 16-acre site for leasing to garbage company IESI.

They are seeking damages for lost business and money that they have already spent on the project. The lawsuit doesn't give total demands yet, but City-Parish Councilman Brandon Shelvin said that Waste Facilities and IESI made recent legal demands totaling around $17 million.

Shelvin also mentioned that the facility would have cost between $3-$4 million if it had been completed.
