Some Iberia Parish residents are back home after briefly evacuating for a chlorine leak from a railroad car.

Iberia Parish Sheriff's Capt. Ryan Turner says the Union Pacific Railroad notified local authorities of a leaking tank car about 5:20 a.m. Saturday.

Turner says three homes were evacuated after local police and fire agencies responded to the train, which was stopped on the north side of New Iberia. No one was injured.

A response team from Olin Corp., under contract with the railroad, sealed the leak and the train resumed its westbound journey.

Turner says the evacuation was lifted about 9 a.m.

The train did not derail, unlike a 26-car Union Pacific derailment that happened Sunday 40 miles northwest in Lawtell, forcing a multi-day evacuation that affected more than 200 people.
