Duson officials are hoping legislation filed by state Rep. Jack Montoucet will soon allow them to levy a hotel/motel tax for those staying in the town's Super 8 hotel.

The legislation, if approved and signed into law, would allow voters to approve a hotel tax rate up to 4 percent. The revenue generated from that tax would be used to help support economic development, tourism, and infrastructure needs, according to the Advocate.

Mayor Johnny Thibodeaux says the tax would only apply to motels and hotels, not RV parks.

If the legislation is approved, Thibodeaux said, the town could bring a tax proposition to voters in the fall and start collecting the tax by Jan. 1.
