MONROE, La. (AP) — Louisiana-Monroe men's basketball head coach Keith Richard has hired Lonnie Cooper as an assistant coach on the Warhawks' staff.

Cooper replaces Brandon Roberts, who decided to get out of coaching and join his family's business in Van, Texas.

Cooper was a four-year starter and three-time All-Sun Belt performer at Louisiana Tech from 1995-99. As a senior, he earned first team All-Sun Belt honors and led the Bulldogs to the Sun Belt regular-season title in Richard's first season as head coach. That season, he also led the nation in free-throw percentage with a .921 clip.

Following his career at Louisiana Tech, Cooper played professionally overseas for 11 seasons.

Cooper's hiring is pending final approval by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors.
