A five mile stretch of the Mississippi River at Baton Rouge has been
closed after several grain barges broke loose and struck the US 190
Bridge. The Coast Guard says three of the barges sank and a fourth
barge came to rest against a dock. The bridge was closed briefly for
inspection. Coast Guard Senior Chief Michael Berry did not know
whether high water contributed to the accident. He did not know when
the river might reopen.
