Louisiana Ragin' Cajun has added Rory Segrest to the coaching staff as defensive line coach/Assistant head coach. Head coach Billy Napier announced the hiring today.

Segrest comes to Louisiana with over 23 years of coaching experience.

“Rory Segrest brings a wealth of experience and character to our staff,” Napier said in a University press release. “He is a technician and proven developer of talent. Having played against his players at Arkansas, I know exactly what we are getting in this hire. His experience in the NFL and SEC will be insightful for our players as well. I’m excited to see his impact both on and off the field. Let’s welcome Rory, his wife Jackie and their son James to Lafayette.”

Most recently, Segrest was the defensive line/specialists coach at Arkansas, working in that role with the Razorbacks from 2014 to 2016.

Former Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema (he was fired in November) wanted to transition the Razorback defense to a 3-4 style last season, leading many to believe it was the reason Segrest wasn't retained by the Razorbacks prior to last year.

Arkansas' defense ranked 98th in the nation in 2017, three years removed from a top 10 defense.

Segrest began his coaching career as a student assistant on Alabama's staff in the mid 90s, before working as a graduate assistant on Auburn's staff from 97-98.

From there, Segrest worked at Southeast Missouri State, then Samford, and eventually joined the Philadelphia Eagles coaching staff in the NFL where he worked as on special teams for two seasons, and then as defensive line coach for two seasons.

After 4 years with the Eagles, he returned to Samford and served as the DL coach/special teams coordinator for three seasons, before ended up at Arkansas.
