One of the most inspirational and amazing young people we have ever had the pleasure to meet and get to know will be getting a special day in his honor.

The Louisiana Legislature is teaming up with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to support its mission of finding cures and saving lives while honoring late St. Jude patient and New Iberia native Markell Gregoire. As you may recall, the teenager lost his battle against osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, earlier this year.

Markell was a huge basketball fan, so it only seems fitting that the legislators will proclaim Monday, May 2, as "Markell Day" because it falls on the same day as HoopLa, the annual Legislative House-Senate basketball game at LSU's Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

During the game, there will be an "Out of Bounds Bash" that includes VIP seating, a silent auction, food and beverages. The New Iberia High School band and dance team will perform. (Markell attended New Iberia High.)

Markell's family will be in attendance, along with friends, classmates, and St. Jude staff who will participate in a check presentation for the hospital after the game.

The game is free and open to the public. Tickets to the "Out of Bounds Bash" are $100 for two people to get VIP seating, food and drinks.

The schedule for the day will be as follows:

2pm - Resolution will be announced in the House Chamber, proclaiming May 2 as "Markell Day."

6pm - HoopLa basketball game, featuring the House versus the Senate. "Out of Bounds Bash" will take place during the game.

8:30pm - Game ends with check presentation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the family of the late Markell Gregoire.
