MONROE, La. (AP) — Sterlington Mayor Vern Breland has been named the new president of the Louisiana Municipal Association.

The News-Star reports that Breland was picked to serve as the group's 2013-2014 president on Saturday during its annual convention at the Monroe Civic Center.

Breland has served as the association's vice president for the past few years.

The group was founded in 1926 and represents more than 300 municipalities across the state.
