A state senator is proposing restrictions on drones in Louisiana, so people can’t spy on their neighbors and government can’t snoop in people’s backyards without cause.

Baton Rouge Sen. Dan Claitor, a Republican, is asking lawmakers to consider criminalizing the use of drones to photograph people on private property without their permission.

The bill will be considered in the legislative session that begins March 10. Claitor says it’s modeled on a similar measure passed in Texas.

Claitor’s proposal includes sixteen different exceptions, including for the military, mapping purposes, maintenance of utility services and certain law enforcement activity.

Violators could be fined up to $500 for using drones and possessing the surveillance material captured by them. Distributing the material would carry a penalty up to $2,000 and six months in jail.
