A team of 7-year-old and 8-year-old football players, following the lead of their coach, took a knee during the playing of the National Anthem at the Slidell Youth Football League Championship game over the weekend.

In a story reported by WDSU TV, there is video proof that the team did just that much to the outrage of many. The board of directors of the league responded with this statement on the league's website.

Slidell Youth Football Association was not aware of this isolated situation prior to the start of the National Anthem. SYFA does not have a rule or by-law in place that tells someone to kneel or stand during the National Anthem. Moving forward we will address the National Anthem at the next General Membership meeting. We want it known that we are 100% Kids First and will not allow coaches to bring their political views into a child’s game.

Earlier this year youth sports in Kenner came under fire after the Mayor of that town issued a memo banning the purchase of any equipment from Nike because of their support for Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has become the defacto face of the Anthem Protest movement. That edict from Mayor Ben Zahn of Kenner was later rescinded after further discussion and community feedback.

As far as the team in question and the coach in question there have been no reports of disciplinary actions being taken. As suggested in the league's statement, the issue concerning kneeling during the National Anthem would be addressed at the league's governing body's next scheduled meeting.
