The 9th-ranked LSU Tigers captured the opening game of a three-game, weekend, SEC baseball series on Friday night, blanking the 10th-ranked Mississippi St. Bullldogs, 3-0, at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.

LSU junior right-hander Aaron Nola (6-1) was the story of the night, tossing eight shutout innings, while allowing only two hits and two walks, and striking out ten batters, before giving way to Joe Broussard, who pitched a scoreless ninth to record his sixth save of the year.

Trevor Fitts (2-2), who lasted only two innings, suffered the loss for Mississippi St.

Sean McMullen, Alex Bregman, and Andrew Stevenson each collected three hits, as the Tigers out-hit the Bulldogs, 7-2.

With the victory, LSU improved to 22-8-1, overall, and 4-5-1 in SEC play, while Mississippi St. fell to 20-11, overall, and 6-4 in league play.

Game two is scheduled for Saturday evening at 6:30 pm.

Freshman left-hander Jared Poche’ (5-2, 2.61 ERA) will start for the Tigers on Saturday, while junior left-hander Ross Mitchell (5-1, 1.55 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Bulldogs.
