LSU Begins Homestand with 11-2 Win over UNO

The top ranked LSU baseball team began their five game homestand with camouflage hats and an 11-2 win over the New Orleans Privateers.

TIGERS COLLECT 14 HITS IN 11-2 VICTORY OVER UNO

BATON ROUGE, La. – Third-ranked LSU extended its win streak to five games Tuesday night with an 11-2 victory over the University of New Orleans. The Tigers also extended their streak of collecting double-digit figures in hits to 11 games.

First baseman Chris Chinea, left fielder Chris Sciambra and designated hitter Kade Scivicque each had a three-hit night, combining for eight RBI and five of the Tigers’ 11 runs.

The Tigers moved to 28-5 on the season, while UNO fell to 11-21.

“I thought we played a very good game tonight; there was a lot of energy in the dugout and we've swung the bats well,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri.

Sophomore right-hander Russell Reynolds (3-0) earned the win for the Tigers, and junior right-hander Kevin Kelleher (1-4) suffered the loss for the Privateers.

Reynolds fired 3.2 innings, giving up no runs on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Senior southpaw Kyle Bouman started on the mound for the Tigers and gave up two earned runs on five hits in his 4.1 innings of work, striking out three.

“I was very pleased with Kyle’s performance tonight,” Mainieri said. “He did exactly what we needed him to do, and then Reynolds came in and gave us another strong outing.”

The Tigers will be back in action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field as they take on Northwestern State. Freshman right-hander Jake Godfrey (5-0) will take the mound for the Tigers in Wednesday night’s contest.

The Tigers put one run on the board Tuesday night in the bottom of the second inning after Chinea doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch by Kyle Kelleher.

With two outs and runners on first and second in the bottom of the third, Scivicque ripped a single to right field, scoring right fielder Mark Laird. After three innings, the Tigers had a 2-0 lead over UNO.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sciambra doubled off of the right field wall, scoring second baseman Kramer Robertson from first base after he reached on a fielder’s choice, bringing the score to 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.

UNO broke up the four-inning shutout by scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Ryan Calloway hit a one-out RBI double, and centerfielder Chaz Boyd scored on a groundout by Sam Capielano.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Chinea hit his second double of the night, scoring centerfielder Andrew Stevenson and Scivicque, who reached after a single up the middle. The Tigers held the 5-2 lead after five innings.

The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth after back-to-back RBI singles from third baseman Danny Zardon and Scivicque, advancing the score to 7-2 in favor of the Tigers.

Sciambra hit his second career home run in the bottom of the seventh, driving in three more runs for the Tigers as they took the 10-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Zardon led off with a walk, and pinch hitter Greg Deichmann reached on a fielder’s choice. Right fielder Beau Jordan hit a single, scoring Zardon and increasing the lead to 11-2.
