LSU Notches 12 K’s in 6-1 Win Over Alcorn St.

Seven LSU pitchers combined to two-hit the Alcorn State Braves while totaling 12 strike outs in a 6-1 win.

Tiger Pitchers Fire Two-Hitter for 6-1 Victory over Alcorn State

BATON ROUGE, La. – Top-ranked LSU used a pair of three-run innings Tuesday night to post a 6-1 win over Alcorn State in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field on Tuesday night.

LSU improved to 38-7 on the year, while Alcorn dropped to 11-37.

LSU travels to Starkville, Miss. as the team faces Mississippi State on Thursday starting at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Live audio will be streamed in the Geaux Zone, and the game may be heard on LSU radio affiliates throughout the state.

LSU utilized seven pitchers on Tuesday night, as the Tigers limited the Braves to only one run on two hits with two walks and 12 strikeouts.

Starter Kyle Bouman took the mound for LSU and worked three innings, allowing only one hit with two strikeouts. Reliever Doug Norman (3-1) earned the win for the Tigers after pitching a scoreless fourth inning with two strikeouts.

Jonathan Morales (0-5) was charged with the loss for the Braves, as he surrendered three hits and three runs in four innings.

“It was the kind of game I expected with cooler temperatures and the wind blowing in,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “It was a close, defensive-oriented game, and I thought all of our pitchers were very effective tonight. The conditions were not conducive to a lot of offense, and Alcorn’s starter kept us off balance early, but we managed to generate enough at the plate to win. We’re happy to put this one behind us and look forward to heading to Starkville for a very important series with Mississippi State.”

Shortstop Alex Bregman ignited the spark for LSU in the fourth inning with a double to left center. Bregman stole third on the next play, and third baseman Conner Hale hit a ground out RBI for the Tigers’ first run of the game. After first baseman Chris Chinea reached first on a walk, centerfielder Andrew Stevenson singled through the right side to advance Chinea to third. Designated hitter Danny Zardon hit a two-out, two-run single on the next at bat to extend LSU’s lead 3-0.

The Braves made things interesting in the seventh as right fielder Scotty Peavey hit a solo shot to right field, cutting into the Tigers’ lead 3-1.

In the bottom half of the eighth, Stevenson singled to right to move Chinea to third. Zardon would fly out on the next play to drive in Chinea for the Tigers’ fourth run of the game. Second baseman Grayson Byrd hit an RBI double up the middle on the next at bat, increasing LSU’s lead to 5-1. Leftfielder Jake Fraley capped off the night, giving the Tigers’ their sixth run of the night on an RBI single to second.
