BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU will begin taking offers from contractors to produce marijuana for the state for medical purposes.

The marijuana-growing operation is estimated to cost $10 million and will be paid for by the contractor.

LSU professor Dr. Ted Gautheir tells WBRZ-TV there's been much interest from people in and out of state. He says he expects there will be about 10 finalists to choose from.

The law calls for the marijuana to be grown indoors, the facility to be located off LSU's campus and for students not to be involved. When a contractor is selected, LSU will not release the facility's location, however it must be based in East Baton Rouge Parish.

LSU expects to have a contractor hired by June. The first crop is expected to be ready by the end of 2017.
