OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — Police say a 60-year-old man is in the St. Landry Parish Jail, accused of sexually assaulting another inmate inside Opelousas City Jail over the weekend.

KATC TV reports Joseph Papillion was booked on a count of sexual battery Tuesday.

Opelousas Police Chief Donald Thompson says the charge will be upgraded once investigators get all their evidence back from the lab.

Thompson says the alleged attack happened Saturday. He says the victim told the warden what happened and jail officials began their investigation.

Thompson says the victim was transported to Opelousas General Hospital where doctors performed a sexual assault exam.

Officials say Papillion was in City Jail on several bench warrants from Opelousas City Court.

Jail officials couldn't provide the name of a defense attorney to comment on the charges.
