THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — A man cleared in the self-defense killing of a teenager earlier this year now faces a year in jail for having a stolen gun.

The Daily Comet reports that the gun was used when 15-year-old Jamonta Miles was killed in Raceland. Attorneys said 21-year-old Byron Rene Thomas admitted in state district court that the gun was stolen.

Lafourche deputies said the January shooting happened as Miles and a group of teens drove to Raceland and began harassing people.

Lafourche Sheriff Craig Webre said Thomas shot in self-defense. A grand jury declined to bring charges.

Thomas' lawyer said the case was handled fairly. His client had given a statement to deputies that he knew the gun was stolen.
