GRAND ISLE, La. (AP) — Officials say a man has drowned in Grand Isle while trying to rescue his child, making him the town's second drowning victim this week.

Multiple news outlets report Grand Isle Police Chief Euris DeBois says the body of Diogenes Zuniga was found off the beach Wednesday morning.

Police say Zuniga drowned on Tuesday trying to get out of the water while holding his 9-year-old son. A woman came and safely took the child, but Zuniga did not resurface.

The Coast Guard searched for him that night.

Jefferson Parish Coroner Gerry Cvitanovich says a Mississippi woman died Sunday after being hit by a wave off Grand Isle. She was also swimming with her son.
