Update: 41-year-old Wilbert J. Bourque, Jr. of Rayne has been identified as the man who died on Sunday.



Rayne Police are investigating a fatal accident that happened Sunday night in the 500 block of American Legion Street.

Just before 9pm police were notified of a crash involving a riding lawnmower and a pickup truck.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that a riding lawnmower driven by a male was traveling east on American Legion Drive near Live Oak Street. Another male was riding on the hood of the lawnmower while a third male was riding in a wheelchair and hanging on to the back of the mower being pulled.

At the same time, a Ford F-150 driven by a female was traveling east on American Legion Drive and struck the wheelchair and lawnmower from behind.

Rayne Police Chief Carroll Stelly said two victims were transported to Acadia General Hospital by ambulance ground units and the third victim was transported by helicopter to Lafayette General Hospital.

Sadly, the driver of the riding lawnmower was later pronounced dead at Acadia General Hospital.

The other two victims were in stable condition.
