Maximum Sentence In Trooper Shooting

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) — A state judge gives a 40-year-old Baton Rouge man the maximum -- 20 years -- for shooting a state trooper at a traffic stop in St. Martin Parish.

Assistant District Attorney Chester Cedars tells The Advocate that District Judge James McClelland also gave Tyrone Mack 15 years for possessing a gun after a felony conviction.

Cedars says the concurrent sentences will begin after one for a Baton Rouge parole violation, so Mack will be in prison until he's about 78 years old.

Garcia pulled Mack's vehicle over at 3:30 a.m. on March 29th, 2007, near the foot of the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge. They fought for Garcia's gun. It went off, hitting Garcia in the arm, leg and ankle.

Codefendant Sidney Wright told investigators he and Mack were both carrying drugs. Wright pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact.
