KPEL personality Tootie Landry goes “Off the Grid” with the Broussard couple.

"Hey! I'm Tootie Landry and this is 'Off the Grid!'

With Valentine's Day fast approaching, I was on a mission to find a couple that has been married longer than I've been alive. To tell the story of how they got here, we have to start from the beginning. A young boy from Kaplan, Louisiana he became a man overnight by the scarring of his heart during WWII. With tears in his eyes, he told me 'I wasn't a hero in the war. It was my Mother's prayers that brought me home alive. The men I buried were the heroes.'

Dennis Broussard returned to Acadiana and entered school at SLI. And that is where the love story begins. It was a cool autumn day walking on campus with friends. Helen will be the first to tell you, it was love at first sight. Money was scarce, so much of their courting was spending time between classes. Both graduated from college. Helen became a teacher, while Dennis went on to become a Principal.

When I asked them, 'What is the secret to staying together so long?' They responded at the same time, 'respect and commitment.' Curious I asked, 'Who wears the pants in this family?' Rolling his eyes Dennis said, 'I may wear the pants, but I'm thinking about the one who's wearing the dress!'

There's no doubt God is #1 in the Broussard marriage. Their family of 4 children and 8 grandchildren are their pride and joy. After 67 years of being married, Dennis smiled and said, "Helen is and will always be my Valentine."

And I'm Tootie Landry and I'm 'Off the Grid!'"
