Mike Stagg says he'll run for the parish's top job this fall, making the announcement on his Facebook page.

Stagg says he enters the race out of a sense of civic duty and that Lafayette deserves better than the cronyism he says exists in the current administration.

Stagg, a Democrat, will run against incumbent Republican President Joey Durel. This will mark the first time in eight years voters will be able to cast a ballot for that spot. Durel had run unopposed in the 2007 election.

This isn't Stagg's first foray into the political arena. He has unsuccessfully run for Governor and the U.S. Congress, and he's been a member of the Lafayette Parish Democratic Executive Committee since 2008.
