Missing Boater Found Dead In Capsized Shrimp Boat

One boater is dead while another survived their shrimp boat capsizing in the Intracoastal Waterway Sunday morning.

According to our news partner KATC, Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office personnel interviewed the surviving  boater, Chris Atwell of Sulphur, who said he tried to rescue his fellow fisherman.

Atwel told officials he tried to open the door to the wheelhouse, then broke a window to rescue his submerged colleague from the boat. Strong currents foiled his rescue attempt in the dangerous conditions.

The dead boater was eventually found in the capsized vessel as deputies trolled the scene.

the Vermilion Parish Marine Division, Dive Team and Wildlife and Fisheries are continuing tobinvestigate the incident.
