A 16-year-old Florida girl is in a Lafayette hospital in critical condition and suffering from multiple stab wounds after a high speed chase that started in Iberville Parish.

Police said bystanders contacted the Iberville Parish Sheriff's Office from a truck stop in Grosse Tete after they recognized the teen, Ashley Lyon, from media coverage.

Deputies from the sheriff's office tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver, 41-year-old Steven Patrick Myers, refused to stop.

The pursuit, which covered some 40 miles, ended shortly after police deployed spike strips. The strips deflated his tires, but he continued driving until the truck was finally disabled.

After the stop, Myers exited the truck with a knife and yelled at deputies to shoot him. Instead, K-9 dogs were used to arrest him.

Myers was suffering from two apparently self-inflicted stab wounds and several K-9 dog bites.

Lyon was reported missing from Florida earlier in the week.
