MONROE, La. (AP) — This city says it will challenge the Census' 2010 population count for Monroe.

The News-Star reports (http://tnsne.ws/LoLEQr ) that Mayor Jamie Mayo's administration believes the Census undercounted the city's population by 2,080 people.

Mayo says the city will send its revised figures to the U.S. Census Bureau. If the city's count is found to be accurate then the city's population would surpass the 50,000-mark.

Mayo has sought to maintain the city's population at over 50,000.

The Census found 48,815 residents in Monroe in 2010. The 2000 Census counted 53,107 residents in Monroe.
