Deidre Druilhet from the state Department of Transportation and Development urged motorists to be cautious while driving through construction zones where workers are present on major roadways.

Druilhet said the month of April is Highway Safety Awareness Month, with this week being designated Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.

"Speeding is not worth it," Druilhet said, alluding to the fact that speeders caught in construction zones pay a higher fine than normal. "When you're going through a work zone...slow down, be on the lookout for those crews that are out there."

Three-hundred-fourteen people have died in road construction zones since 1989, Druilhet said. In 2012, there were 12 deaths in Louisiana.

"One death is just too many for us," Druilhet said.
