New Orleans Police say 20-year-old Bajkanwar Aulakh of Lafayette is the man who shot himself after a three-hour standoff in the Westin Hotel over the weekend, according to The Associated Press.

According to louisianaradionetwork.com, Aulakh apparently shot his 24-year-old friend in the chest before turning the gun on himself. NOPD spokesman officer Frank Robertson III says the friend is in serious condition.

Robertson says reports of gunfire came around 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning. He says responding officers were forced to retreat and wait for backup.

"When our officers arrived they tried to make entry into a particular room at which time one of the occupants pointed a gun at our officers," said Robertson.

It took three hours of negotiating before officers were finally able to get into the room, which was occupied by four men.

Police continue to investigate.
