One Acadiana Parish will be honored for its stormreadiness. Major Ginny Higgins with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office says her parish will be added to a list of "StormReady" Sites in the state. There are currently only 16 sites on the list. The National Weather Service will recognize the parish at its Council Meeting tomorrow night at 5 pm.
In order to be recognized as a StormReady Parish, there were several criteria that had to be met such as the following:

  • Incorporate St. Martin Parish’s severe weather threats into their hazard mitigation and emergency preparedness response plans
  • Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center
  • Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public
  • Create a system that monitors weather conditions locally
  • Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars
  • Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises
