THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Construction will soon begin on a long-awaited pedestrian bridge over Bayou Lafourche in Thibodaux.

The bridge is one of a few projects city officials will move from planning to reality in the coming year.

Mayor Tommy Eschete tells The Courier (http://bit.ly/WKtq68 ) the pedestrian bridge will be attached to the vehicle bridge on Canal Boulevard, with a handrail separating foot traffic from passing cars.

Luci Sposito, Grants and Economic Development director for the city, said the project has been through various delays.

Sposito says the latest snag dealt with bridge lighting needing to comply with highway requirements.

Grant money will pay for much of the $600,000 project.
