NEW ORLEANS (AP) — New Orleans police say a 43-year-old officer collapsed while patrolling on Bourbon Street and died in an ambulance.

Superintendent Michael Harrison tells news media that Officer Bryan Bordes told his partner about 4 a.m. Sunday that he was having stomach pains, and collapsed before the ambulance arrived.

Police spokesman Tyler Gamble said in an emailed statement that the coroner will perform an autopsy

Harrison says Bordes' partner told medics that Bordes appeared to be having a seizure.

Harrison says Bordes was an 18-year veteran and had spent 10 years in the district covering the French Quarter.

He says Bordes loved his job, and died doing what he loved.
