Nicholls State to eliminate some youth programs

Thibodaux, La. (AP) — Because of budget cuts, Nicholls State University's Family Services Center, the office in charge of the program, has decided to end Project Le Cirque.

Since January 2007, Le Cirque has helped children from kindergarten to eighth grade in Senator Circle.

Nicholls students mentored about 60 children in a Houma housing complex for low-income families.

Le Cirque is run under a contract between Nicholls and the South Central Louisiana Human Services Authority, which is part of the state Health Department. The agency sustained a 9.8 percent budget cut as a result of the governor's health-care initiatives.
