CARLSBAD, Calif. (AP) — California's governor has declared a state of emergency for San Diego County, where nine wildfires have been burning.

In Carlsbad, fire has destroyed an eight-unit condo building and damaged eight homes and two businesses.

Some 21,000 residents in San Marcos were told to evacuate Wednesday, and 10,000 students were evacuated from a California State University campus.

Another fire blackened 6,000 acres on and around the Camp Pendleton Marine base.
