SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — An American veteran of the Korean War is being detained in North Korea.

The son of 85-year-old Merrill Newman tells the San Jose Mercury News that his father was taken off a plane set to leave North Korea Oct. 26.

Newman's traveling companion was allowed to leave the country.

The U.S. State Department hasn't confirmed the detention. North Korea has detained at least six other Americans since 2009.
