LAFAYETTE, La. (KPEL) -- Melinda Voorhies will not resign from her position as principal at Northside High School following what she and school board Superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper are calling a misunderstanding.

In a joint statement from both Voorhies and Cooper, Voorhies has rescinded her resignation and will remain in place at Northside.

"Ms. Voorhies has many gifts and has done a phenomenal job at NHS and made a positive impact on the students, parents, and community," Cooper said. "She initially intended to resign as a result of an unfortunate misunderstanding."

The two of them met to discuss the situation, Cooper said, and he is pleased with her decision. Both have made a mutual agreement to avoid similar miscommunications in the future, Cooper said.

"I love the Northside community, and I appreciate Dr. Cooper's support for our work out there," Voorhies said. "I look forward to continuing the work we've begun in creating a school that inspires our students to achieve and succeed."
