PINEVILLE, La. (AP) — A nursing assistant has been arrested on a manslaughter charge stemming from an alleged physical altercation with a patient at a Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility in Pineville.

The Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office says 52-year-old Fredrick Kevin Harris was booked into jail Tuesday and remained in custody Friday, held on $250,000 bond.

Rocky Willson, a prosecutor for the Rapides Parish District Attorney's Office, said witnesses told investigators that Harris struck the patient at Alexandria VA Medical Center in March.

Willson said the man was treated for a head injury at a different hospital before he was transferred to a Grant Parish nursing home, where he later died.

Willson said his office filed the manslaughter charge after an autopsy found that the man died of head trauma.
