Nutria have no natural predators in the Louisiana swamp but Hahnsel Harlan but is helping to control them and make a profit too.  On 'Mornings With Ken & Bernie" Harlan said his company Marsh Dog is starting to distribute dog treats called Barataria Bites across South Louisiana.

 

Nutria can't be eradicated and they have to be controlled Harlan said, "that's just going to be an ongoing expense for Louisiana since there is no commercial market for the meat the state has to pay that five dollar bounty for each harvested animal."

We asked Harlan what the dogs seemed to think of the nutria treats and he said so far the dogs just think of the product as protein.  He said some customers into have even fed the treats to cats and birds and they seem to love them.
