NEW YORK (AP) — It's been an uncommon night on the campaign trail for five New York City mayoral candidates. They spent the night in a public housing complex to get a firsthand look at mold and other problems there.

Democrats Bill de Blasio , John Liu, Christine Quinn, Bill Thompson and Anthony Weiner spent Saturday night with different host families at the Lincoln Houses complex.

Afua Atta-Mensah is one of the organizers. She says participants hope if one of the candidates becomes mayor, he or she will use memories of the night spent in Lincoln Houses to inform policy-making.

About 3,100 residents live in the 65-year-old complex. It's run by the New York City Housing Authority.

The Housing Authority declined to comment on the event.
