Obama: Landrieu’s Biggest Hurdle In Louisiana
THIBODAUX, La. (AP) — Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu isn't running against President Barack Obama, but she might as well be.
The president is intensely unpopular among white voters in Louisiana, and Republicans and Democrats agree that dynamic could doom Landrieu in a Dec. 6 runoff against Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy.
Landrieu led Cassidy and seven other candidates in a Nov. 4 primary. But she got just 42 percent statewide. That's well below her totals in three previous elections.
Exit polls showed that Landrieu got just 18 percent of the white vote. And nearly three out of four white voters told pollsters they strongly disapprove of Obama.
Landrieu has attempted to distance herself from Obama and characterize Cassidy as an extreme Republican who would cut Social Security and Medicare.
