A man and his dog were able to escape a fire in their mobile home last night in Milton.

Three fire departments, Milton, Youngsville and Broussard went to the fire in the 1700 block of East Milton Avenue to find heavy smoke coming from the back area of the mobile home.

Mike Leger told fire investigators he was asleep when his smoke alarm started going off after about 9 o'clock last night.

He says his home was filling up with smoke, he opened the back door and realized his porch was on fire. He and his dog then went out the front door where he called 911.

Milton Fire Chief Damon Broussard says it took firefighters about fifteen minutes to get the blaze under control.

The fire, which has been ruled an accident, is believed to have started with a heating lamp that the man was using to protect his plants from the harsh temperatures.
