NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans police officer has been suspended after fleeing from police on the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway.

Authorities say Sgt. Gary Calico, a 22-year veteran of the police force, refused to pull over for a Causeway police officer and led the officer on a high speed chase early Thursday morning, shortly after midnight. Calico got away from his pursuer. When officers arrived at his Covington home, Calico refused to come out.

Calico surrendered at the St. Tammany Parish jail Thursday night. His attorney, Raymond Burkart, says Calico should be presumed innocent.

It's the second time Calico has been caught speeding on the bridge. In 2007, he was arrested after a chase in which he was clocked at 112 mph.

Calico was fired in January 2008, but was later reinstated.
