HOUMA, La. (AP) — August and September are historically the most active months for hurricanes, and officials say the time is now to make sure your home is covered by flood insurance.

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials note that policies through the National Flood Insurance Program do not take effect until 30 days after purchase. Waiting for a storm to enter the Gulf won't protect you.

Jeanne Salvatore, the Insurance Information Institute's senior vice president for public affairs, said in a news release about 20 percent of all flood claims come from moderate-to-low flood risk areas, she added.

The Courier reports an analysis released last month shows that almost every home and business in Terrebonne and Lafourche is at risk of flooding from a hurricane storm surge.
