OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — A St. Landry Parish judge has sentenced 24-year-old Dominique Jackson, convicted for the second-degree murder of 2-year-old Derrion Sam, to life in prison without parole.

On Dec. 19, 2011, Sam died from blunt force trauma to the abdomen. The child's mother, Latricia Hunt, awaits trial on charges of second-degree cruelty to a child.

The Advertiser reports Jackson was convicted Jan. 29 for beating Sam and causing broken ribs and other damage to the child's abdomen. Sam died within 24 hours of his injuries.
