Police in Opelousas arrested a man and took some $1,200 of illegal drugs off the streets following an operation Friday night.

According to Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow, a team of officers designed to investigate high crime areas approached a vehicle on Truman Street. Inside the vehicle, Gallow said police found more than $500 in cash, hydro-marijuana, and 32 ounces of promethazine codeine syrup concealed in a 32 ounce bottle.

Twenty-seven-year-old Antonio Rideau, Jr., was arrested and charged with a traffic violation, possession with intent to distribute an schedule I drug, possession with intent to distribute a schedule V drug, and proceeds derived from drug offenses.

Gallow said the seizure marked the "first significant arrest in light of the recent violence attributed to illegal drugs" in the area.

Rideau will appear before a magistrate Monday morning, Gallow said.
