NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The City Council in New Orleans is getting ready to begin budget hearings.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu's administration presented a proposed $491 million budget last week, saying many city departments will face cuts of from 8 percent to 10 percent.

Council hearings on the budget are set to begin Wednesday. Among the department and agency budgets to be discussed are those of the city's planning commission and the commission that oversees development in the historic French Quarter.

The council has to adopt a budget by Nov. 30.
