The United Nations made a historic move to recognize a Palestinian state in the Middle East.  In statements made to the U.N, Palestinian Leader Mahmoud Abbas said,

The Israeli aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip has confirmed once again the urgent and pressing need to end the Israeli occupation, and for our people to gain their freedom and independence

He went on to call Israel guilty of racist, colonial occupation and added that the "rope of patience was shortening.

But, the Israeli Ambassador to the U.N. said that direct negotiations were the way to go to get peace to take place in the area.  He said that the resolution would only make it tougher to come to terms.
