This morning an area of downtown Opelousas surrounding the Police Department was cleared due to the presence of a hand grenade. The grenade was transported by a man who found it in a vacant rental property. According to our news partner KATC the man brought it to the police station but left it in his car while he went in to report the explosive.

Opelousas Police Department spokesman Corey Leger said the State Police bomb squad was called in and they determined the grenade was a decommissioned grenade that contained no explosive.

Leger noted the proper way to treat a possible explosive device is to leave it in place, leave the building or vicinity and call the police department.
