MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) — The Mandeville City Council has voted down an ordinance that would have allowed the city to prosecute and levy fines against people who don't pick up their pet's poop on public property or on the property of others.

The ordinance also called for "Curb Your Dog" signs along the city's lakefront, where most of the complaints about pet poop have surfaced.

Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reports the vote was 4-1 against the ordinance Thursday.

Council members say the city should work with the Keep Mandeville Beautiful organization to discourage the practice of unchecked pet poop.

Backers say they wanted to bolster the city's anti-litter program by dealing with pet waste not only on the lakefront but on all public property not belonging to the pet owner.
