There is a petition circulating online to encourage Congress to award the Cajun Navy the Congressional Gold Meda.

The Change.org petition, at the time of this writing, has over 20,000 signatures. Their goal is 25,000.

The petition highlights the achievements of the Cajun Navy since its inception:

The "Cajun Navy" has worked tirelessly over the last few years to help tens of thousands of people who have been pummeled by some of the worst storms in American history. This volunteer group of private boat owners have put their lives on the line to help people in need during natural disasters. - Change.org

Starting as a loosely-organized effort of volunteers using their personal equipment including boats, ATVs, and PWCs to rescue people stranded during Hurricane Katrina, the group became a national sensation and have gone on to help thousands of more people in several natural disasters.

Let's ask Congress to hold up the work the "Cajun Navy" has done during these last few years and continues to do each and every year during natural disasters. Their work can be life-saving, and Congress has a unique moment to thank these folks for volunteering to save their neighbors from floods, hurricanes, tropical storms and more. - Change.org
